iPhone 4, WriteMonkey

It's been a long time now since I have updated this blog. I could give many reasons, but let's just say I will try more in 2011.

I finally gave in, and bought myself an iPhone 4 - and I have to say, I LOVE it. I tend to stay away from first generation of products, and after 4 generations, I think it was safe to get one now. I had an iPod Touch for some time, and I liked it - not so much for playing music, but for the apps and the convenience of checking my mail and using the internet. However, with the iPod Touch, I had to have access to a free hot spot and there are not too many of those left - most people are getting smart and password protecting their routers.

With the iPhone 4, there are no such limitations, since I can get online practically anywhere. Furthermore, it has been improved significantly - to the point that many of the newer apps just will not run on older generation devices like my 1st generation iPod Touch.

I think my wife likes it too, although she says she does not want one. However, she is forever asking to borrow my phone so she can check her email (I think she is becoming an email junkie). She usually does this at home, despite the fact that we have several computers in the house. She finds it easier and faster to use the iPhone, than to power up the computer.

She asked me about my old iPod Touch - specifically if she could have it. Of course, I said she could. Now I will have to spend some time with her to teach her how to use it. She will be able to use it to check her mail at home, since we have WiFi. On the road, she will still use my phone as usual.

My data plan is generous - 5 GB for $30 per month. Many new customers are paying $25 for only 500 MB - I have 10 times that amount for only $5 more per month.

My daughter and her husband each have iPads, and to be honest, the iPad is one cool tablet computer. I have played with it several times and have to admit it is great, although a tad heavy. One big drawback: no Adobe Flash content. Yes, I would like one, but I will wait until the next generation - supposed to be one early this year. Also, I am waiting for an announcement from my ISP (Rogers) - rumour has it that they are going to offer a data plan which can be shared between an iPhone and an iPad. (currently, if someone wanted both, they would have to sign up for a data plan for each device).

I am using a new tool to write this entry. I am writing offline, as I have often lost my data when writing online and there is a hiccup on the internet. So, I usually compose offline, and copy/paste into my blog. In this case, I am using a new tool I read about today, called WriteMonkey. It is a very basic word processor, that is very fast and easy to use; some say it is like using a typewriter. And the initial use makes it looks like that, using a courier font. I have customized it to use the Ariel font, in green colour on a black background. It looks quite a lot like the old computer terminals I used to use back in the 70s.

I can't believe that Lois worked for Apple for so many years and wasn't one of the first to jump on the iphone bandwagon! And that an IBMer had to show her how to use the itouch, lol!

I think her own ipad is in order for Xmas this year :)
